　　雷峰塔初建于北宋太平興國二年(公元977年)，原本為吳越國王錢淑為奉藏佛螺髻發(fā)舍利子以祈禱國泰民安所建，原名叫皇妃塔，塔為磚木結(jié)構(gòu)。雷峰塔的知名度之高，與中國民間廣泛流傳的神話傳說《白蛇傳》密切相關(guān)，故事中白蛇的化身白素貞因追求人間真情而被法海和尚囚禁于雷峰塔下，雷峰塔因而聲明遠(yuǎn)播。歷史上的雷峰塔曾兩次遭遇大火，第一次是在北宋宣和年間，因方臘起義，一把火把外面的木結(jié)構(gòu)塔身加以焚毀。到了南宋年間，曾重修雷峰塔，西湖十景之一的"雷峰夕照"就是在那個時候流傳的。雷峰塔第二次遭受火燒是在明朝的嘉靖年間，當(dāng)時倭寇侵犯杭州，雷峰塔再次把火焚，僅剩塔身屹立于西湖之濱。這種情形一直持續(xù)到清末民初，雷峰塔終因不堪重負(fù)而倒塌了。關(guān)于雷峰塔倒塌的原因，歷史上也很有爭論，一般來講有兩種說法，前兩年在清理雷峰塔遺址的時候，發(fā)現(xiàn)有相當(dāng)一部分的塔磚一側(cè)有一個小洞，在洞里有佛經(jīng)。而在過去，老百姓們以訛傳訛將經(jīng)磚傳成金磚，紛紛將塔磚拿回家，從而導(dǎo)致塔的倒塌。此說法之一。說法之二，由于江南自古就是魚米之鄉(xiāng)，而杭州又是絲茶之府，歷史上的杭州就盛產(chǎn)絲綢，而每年蠶寶寶吐絲結(jié)繭之時由于多種原因，往往有大量的蠶繭死亡，過去的人迷信，誤以為蠶繭中了邪，而雷峰塔是鎮(zhèn)妖的(白蛇)，以為將雷峰塔的磚放在家里，就可以抵擋妖邪的侵蝕，你家養(yǎng)蠶拿一塊，他家求財拿一塊，久而久之，塔身特別是塔基由于老百姓的破壞，加上當(dāng)權(quán)者的漠不關(guān)心，雷峰塔終于在1924年9月25日下午1點(diǎn)40分轟然倒塌。
