He is waiting for the airline ticket counter when he first notices the young woman. She has glossy black hair pulled tightly into a knot at the back of her bead-the man imagines it loosed and cascading to the small of her back-and carries over she shoulder of her leather coat a heavy black purse. She wears black boots of soft leather. He struggles to see her face-she is ahead of him in line-but it is not until she has bought her ticket and turns to walk away that he realizes her beauty, which is pale and dark-eyed and full-mouthed, and which quickens his heart beat. She seems aware that he is staring at her and lowers her gaze abruptly.
About Trees
Ladies and gentlemen, I want to say something about trees. As we know now trees are very important to human beings. First of all, they benefit our health.
They send out oxygen for us to breathe. We can't live without trees. Secondly, trees can beautify our environment.
As trees are so important, we must do our best to protect them. We must enforce the tree protection laws. We must plant as many trees as possible. Only in this way can we live happily in the beautiful world.
Spotlight on Copenhagen
Are you too old for fairy tales? If you think so, Copenhagen is sure to change your mind①.
See the city first from the water. In the harbor sits Denmark’s best-known landmark: the Little Mermaid. Remember her? She left the world of the sea in search of a human soul in one of Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved fantasies. From the harbor you can get a feel for the attractive “city of green spires.” At twilight or in cloudy weather, the copper-covered spires of old castles and churches lend the city a dream-like atmosphere. You’ll think you’ve stepped into a watercolor painting.
Copenhagen is a city on a human scale. You don’t have to hurry to walk the city’ s center in less than an hour. Exploring it will take much longer. But that’s easy. Copenhagen was the first city to declare a street for pedestrians only. The city has less traffic noise and pollution than any other European capital.
Stroll away from the harbor along the riverbanks, you’ll see the modest Amalienburg Palace first. Completed in the mid-18th century, it still houses the royal family. The Danish Royal Guard is on duty. At noon, you’ll watch the changing of the guard. The guards are not just for show, however. Danes will always remember their heroism on April 9, 1940. When the Nazis invaded Denmark, the guards aimed their guns and fired. Soldiers fell on both sides. The guards would all have been killed if the king hadn’t ordered them to surrender.
Churches and castles are almost all that remain of the original city. Copenhagen became the capital of Denmark in 1445. During the late 16th century, trade grew, and so did the city. But fires in 1728 and 1795 destroyed the old wooden structures. Much of what we see today dates from the 19th and early 20th centuries②.
See one of the spires up close — really close — at the 17th century Church of Our Savior. Brave souls may climb the 150 stairs winding outside the spire to its top. If you’re afraid of heights, or if it’s a windy day, you can forget the climb. But then you’ll miss the magnificent view.
Another round of energy crisis is knocking at the door. in 20xx world oil consumption reached a new record causing oil price in the international market to skyrocket amazingly. as for china it was reported that many traditional mineral cities in northeastern china had run into predicament with their economy collapsed and workers unemployed only because coal had been mined out. fossil energy resources including coal oil and gas are unlike sunlight water power and wind power which are generated consistently. they’re not practically reproductive during human history. once consumed they’re gone forever.
If they were to be exhausted before we could find sufficient reproductive resources to replace them with we’d have to live in entire blackout again like our ancestors have done thousands of years ago. that’s of course not what anyone would want to see.
Due to technical limitations people still have to utilize these resources now. as a result we must economize them most cleverly. new techniques should be developed and applied to reduce energy cost in industry and daily life. alternative energy should be employed wherever possible. eradicate any practice that wastes energy.
Humans have overcome so many crises in history and we’re sure to win this time also.
With the development of IT, online chatting is becoming increasingly popular with many people.
However, people’s opinions about it vary from person to person. Some think that it has more problems than benefits. First, it is a waste of time, energy and money as it doesn’t produce any useful information and products. Second, it is misleading to its users because cyberspace is actually an imaginary space where things are unreal or fictional.
But the advocates of online chatting support it because it is another way of recreation which is both exciting and relaxing. Besides, it helps them release their emotions and worries freely and safely. To them, it is very useful and wonderful.
As far as I am concerned, whether online chatting is good or bad depends on the person who does it.
